Advanced NDT

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing & Time of Flight Diffraction

At Charlton Metal Testing, we deliver advanced ultrasonic inspection using PAUT and TOFD, supported by a highly skilled team of advanced UT technicians. Our specialists bring deep technical knowledge and extensive field experience, ensuring accurate data acquisition, reliable interpretation, and full compliance with industry standards and client specifications.

We mobilise quickly and operate nationwide — and internationally when required — supporting fabrication projects, shutdowns, new construction, and in‑service inspection programmes. Our advanced ultrasonic capabilities provide high‑resolution imaging and precise defect characterisation, making them ideal for critical welds, structural and pressure retaining components, and areas where enhanced coverage is required.

Why PAUT & TOFD?

  • High‑resolution data for detailed assessment of welds and components
  • Excellent coverage across the full weld volume, including HAZ and fusion faces
  • Accurate defect sizing with repeatable, auditable results
  • Permanent digital records for traceability, trending, and future comparison
  • Reduced need for multiple scans, improving efficiency on large or complex welds
  • Complementary techniques — PAUT and TOFD used together enhance detection and sizing confidence
  • Suitable for a wide range of materials and thicknesses

Digital Radiography

Digital Radiography (DR) provides fast, high‑clarity imaging without the need for traditional film, making it one of the most efficient and versatile inspection methods available. Using advanced digital detectors, we capture immediate, high‑resolution images that allow for rapid assessment of welds, components, and critical structures. This real‑time capability significantly reduces downtime, speeds up decision‑making, and provides consistent, repeatable results across a wide range of applications.

Our technicians are trained in both the operation of digital radiography systems and the interpretation of digital images, ensuring every inspection meets industry expectations for accuracy, contrast, and sensitivity. DR is ideal for fabrication environments, shutdown work, and any situation where fast turnaround and minimal disruption are essential.

Why digital radiography?

  • Instant image capture, enabling rapid assessment and reduced downtime
  • High‑resolution digital output with excellent contrast and defect visibility
  • No film processing, eliminating chemicals, darkrooms, and long wait times
  • Ideal for weld inspection, fabrication work, and time‑critical projects
  • Easier storage, sharing, and traceability through digital file management
  • Consistent, repeatable results with modern detector technology
  • Reduced site disruption, with smaller exclusion zones compared to traditional radiography
