Magnetic Particle Inspection
Magnetic fields reveal surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials.
Magnetic Particle Inspection is a key surface and near‑surface inspection method at Charlton Metal Testing, delivered by a highly skilled team of technicians. Our inspectors bring extensive experience across fabrication, structural steelwork, heavy engineering, and in‑service plant, ensuring every inspection is carried out safely, accurately, and in full accordance with industry standards.
We mobilise quickly and operate nationwide — and internationally when required — supporting shutdowns, fabrication yards, construction projects, and ongoing maintenance programmes. We carry out both visible and fluorescent MPI, and our dedicated on‑site dark‑tent capability allows us to perform high‑sensitivity fluorescent inspections even in challenging environments where controlled lighting is essential. Whether examining welds, castings, forgings, or critical structural components, our team delivers clear, dependable results supported by precise interpretation and comprehensive reporting.
Why magnetic particle inspection?
- Highly sensitive and industry standard to surface-breaking and near-surface defects
- Ideal for ferromagnetic materials such as carbon steel and low-alloy steels
- Fast, efficient inspection suitable for high-volume or repetitive welds
- Immediate results with clear visual indications
- Effective for complex shapes and geometries
- Minimal surface preparation required for most applications
- Widely used and trusted across fabrication, construction, and in-service inspection
