Eddy Current Inspection

Electromagnetic coils detect surface and near-surface flaws in conductive materials.

Eddy Current Testing is a fast, versatile electromagnetic method used to detect surface and near‑surface defects in conductive materials. At Charlton Metal Testing, our ECI technicians bring a strong mix of technical expertise and practical field experience, allowing us to adapt the technique to everything from fine crack detection to rapid screening of large areas.

We carry out conventional eddy current, pencil‑probe inspections, weld scanning, heat exchanger tube testing, and coating thickness checks, selecting the right equipment and frequency setup to suit the material, geometry, and access available. Our teams mobilise quickly across the UK and internationally, supporting shutdowns, maintenance programmes, fabrication work, and specialist inspection campaigns.

Whether assessing stainless steel welds, non‑ferrous components, machined surfaces, or areas where radiography or MPI aren’t suitable, we provide clean, interpretable signals backed by confident analysis and clear reporting.

Why eddy current testing?

  • Capable of inspecting through thin coatings & paint without removal
  • Highly sensitive to surface and near‑surface cracking in conductive materials
  • Ideal for non‑ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper alloys, and stainless steels
  • No consumables, making it efficient and environmentally clean
  • Excellent for weld toe and HAZ scanning
  • Immediate signal response, enabling rapid decision‑making
  • Portable and adaptable, suitable for both workshop and field environment
